Why are we so adamant that you need to hire a professional if you want to have your system tuned up properly? Well, it’s much more than just the basic cleaning and perhaps the tightening up of a few bolts than you may expect. During annual maintenance, there is a whole long, complex checklist of tasks that must be completed with care. Some items on these lists include the following.
- Cleaning and lubricating moving parts.
- Cleaning and testing electrical connections.
- Checking refrigerant charge (that’s a big one!).
- Testing amperage/voltage.
- Checking motor function.
- Testing thermostat, and other components.

Okay, You Convinced Me. There’s Nothing I Can Do.
That is not what we said at all! Your annual AC maintenance is a necessity, and only a trained professional can handle that maintenance. However, there are a couple of basic maintenance tasks that you actually can and should handle on your own.
The most important is changing your air filter as needed. We’ll do this during your tune-up, but it definitely needs to be done more than once a year. Typically, you’ll need to change your air filter every month or two. We recommend checking in it monthly to be safe.
You should also be sure to keep the outdoor unit clean and free of debris. Spray it down if there are grass clippings all over it, as that can inhibit the release of heat via the condenser. You should also keep the top of the unit free of any tree limbs, etc.
