We understand that investing in a new air conditioning system may not exactly be the most exciting way in which to spend your hard-earned money. That being said, it is an important way in which to spend those funds and, eventually, a necessary way to do so. You want to live comfortably during the summer season, and that means using a whole-house air conditioner. It also means replacing your air conditioner eventually, as no AC will last forever.

Now, we also understand that, while you want to live comfortably, you don’t want to be replacing your air conditioner prematurely. That would just be a  waste of money.  You also don’t want to wait for your system to break down entirely before doing so, though, as that will result in a period of discomfort should it happen at a time when your AC is still needed. This is typically the case, so today we’ll give you some tips on when to replace your air conditioner in Grand Rapids, MI.

Your System’s Age Is a Factor

But perhaps not the deciding factor that some homeowners seem to think it is. Yes, a very old air conditioner is going to be a prime candidate for replacement. That doesn’t mean that it never makes sense to replace a younger air conditioning system, though, nor does it mean that an older air conditioner will definitely need to be replaced. So what role does age play?

It really helps to influence your decisions regarding replacement when there are other factors, like the following 2, to consider. If you have an old air conditioner and you have the funds to replace it now, then that is definitely a fine reason for doing so. If you’re not sure about replacing your older system, though, consider these additional points.

Efficiency Leads to Long-Term Savings—or Expense

If you have an old air conditioner, it is very possible that this system is no longer capable of functioning at the efficiency levels that it once did. The fact is that time really takes a toll, and that is often reflected by increased energy costs. Your system may also be old enough that it was simply manufactured at a time when expectations regarding efficiency were lower.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that younger systems are necessarily very efficient, either. If you inherited your air conditioner with a new home, then it may be of a lower efficiency rating than you’d have chosen for yourself. If you were short on funds when investing in your new system, then you may have skimped on efficiency. If you have the money for a replacement now, then you could invest in a system that will save you money in energy costs over time.

Is Your System There for You?

Again, age will play a factor in this consideration. If your air conditioner has the occasional need for repairs, well, that’s normal. If the system starts to need frequent repairs, or if the repair in question is quite costly,  then a replacement may make more sense. This is often true when the system is quite old and doesn’t have much time left, anyway.
