If your furnace needs to be repaired, then there’s not much a simple tip or trick will do. Professional repairs performed by experienced technicians will be the best things you can get for your heating system, hands down. This blog post isn’t about avoiding furnace repair in that sense. It’s about avoiding heater repair before it becomes a pressing issue. If your heating system is in good shape, and it seems to be running well, then think of it this way—you’ll need heater repairs eventually. This blog post is for you!
Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that homeowners do that lead to furnace problems. Neglect, DIY fixes, and even the layout of your furniture could be negatively impacting the heat in your home. Today, we’ll cover three things you can do right now to better treat your system and avoid repairs in the future.
1. Change Your Air Filter on a Reoccurring Basis
It’s your monthly reminder to change the air filter in your heating system again! In all seriousness, there’s a pretty good reason why we mention this so much. It’s something so small and simple that most homeowners actually forget to do it, but it has a huge impact on the functionality of your heating system.
We advise you to start a calendar and write down when you’re supposed to change your air filter. Then it’ll be harder for you to forget and we promise that your heating system will thank you for this hard work by being less likely to fail or need repairs as often.
2. Insulate Your Home and Check Your Air Vents
Insulation is the barrier between the heat in your home and the chilly air outdoors. The more you keep your doors and windows covered up and insulated, the more likely it is that your heating system doesn’t have to work so hard because the air it heats will remain in your home for longer!
Also, allow for maximum airflow by checking the air vents in your house. If they’re covered up by furniture or boxes, then you might be inhibiting your heater’s ability to heat your home! Try clearing out your air vents and allowing the air to flow through your home. This will make the burden easier on your furnace or other forced-air heating system and lead to better results that you can feel.
3. Keep the System Clean and Clear
Do you keep a lot of storage in your basement? It’s a good idea! Especially for things like ornaments, seasonal activity gear, and other types of equipment that are only really useful for certain times of the year. However, if you’re placing this stuff on top of your furnace, or even within a couple of feet, you could be leading your furnace to struggle and even overheat in certain situations.
We advise homeowners to keep at least two feet clear around their furnace systems, so the system can run as intended. Also, if it’s caked in dirt or dust, try cleaning it off a little bit. This could help it run more smoothly and clean the air around it.
